Make a "song" using only a Kick drum Drums are the foundation of music. Learn how to use the pencil tool in your DAW to draw a Kick drum. Add a bassline instrument Bass and Kick are like peanut butter and jelly. If you draw a Kick pattern, you can randomly draw in some Bass notes too. Here's an example of a song that uses Bass + Kick and not much else. The White Stripes - 'Seven Nation Army'ĥ. Get over the embarrassment that your music sounds so basic. Get used to playing your music to other people. I was embarrassed by my music production for the first 15 years of my "music producer" life, and I regret waiting so long to show my music to other people. The first time I ever played my song in public was when I was hanging out with the CEO of Beatport, and I played it for him. ![]() ![]() (If you love techno and minimal house, you don't have to go further than this bullet point. Just practice the first 5 steps and add subtle complexity to your music. Here's an example of an iconic techno song that uses only Drums: Plastikman - SpastikĦ. Move one of the beeps higher on the piano, so it becomes: "beep beep beep BAAAAAAA" Add a melody Choose a synth in your DAW, and draw "beep beep beep beep" notes. Some of the greatest melodies are really basic if you look at them as MIDI notes.ħ. Add a chord progression Chords add emotion to your music: they make it sad or happy. Almost every song in the world has some chords. I don't like how AMAs have become so self-promotional, so I want to resist the urge to self-promote.
